How to sew curtains yourself?

Curtains are an elegant window decoration that gives the interior privacy and coziness. If you are wondering how to sew original curtains yourself , then you are in the right place. Curtains, blinds or curtains are an excellent decoration not only in the living room, but also in the bedroom, children's room or home office. In a practical way, they darken the room, while giving it character. Tailor-made curtains are a method for a quick and inexpensive metamorphosis of the house. In this guide, we answer questions about how to make curtains and what kind to choose.

What materials can curtains be sewn from?

Sewing curtains is not as difficult as it may seem, and a self-made window decoration will bring a lot of satisfaction. The first step when sewing curtains or curtains is to choose the right grade of material. Remember that in addition to the decorative function, curtains must also have a practical application. During summer, sunny days, hand-woven on looms and naturally dyed shantung silk will work best. In winter, however, it is good to hang curtains made of heavier, heat-retaining materials – in this case, jacquard fabric will work great. When looking for the perfect fabric, it is also worth paying attention to the quality of the product. Choose materials that are easy to care for, non-creasing and durable. When you find the perfect fabric, you can proceed to the next step.

What tools are needed to sew curtains?

Sewing curtains is not a difficult art, and as a result, you do not need many complicated tools to create an original interior decoration. In addition to the appropriate material, you will need a sewing machine, threads and scissors. Depending on what type of curtains you choose, you will need additional plastic grommets. Are you wondering how to sew curtains on tape, braces or with bangs? We will help you choose the best type of curtains for you.

Types of curtains – how do they differ and which type to choose?

In stores you will find many types of curtains with different applications. Each of them will bring a slightly different effect, so it is worth getting to know all of them and deciding which method of hanging curtains will best suit the climate of your interior.

  • on the tape – usually fixed on the curtain rod with frogs, equipped with special tapes that allow aesthetic wrinkling of the material. Often a replacement name for a curtain with a tunnel is used, due to the way the fabric is put on the curtain rod.
  • on grommets – if you are wondering how to sew curtains on grommets, it is worth knowing how they will look in your home. Plastic or metal grommets are nothing more than hoops that are translated through the rod of the curtain rod. Curtains on the grommets create the effect of soft and regular waves.
  • on braces – this type of curtains ensures easy assembly and disassembly, as well as quick movement of curtains on the curtain rod. It is also a good idea to rework a curtain of a different type, and thus refresh the interior.
  • with bangs – this is a variant of the so-called curtains on the channel, which means directly inserting the material onto the curtain rod. Decorative bangs are a ruffled material above the height of the curtain rod, which creates an elegant effect and is suitable for tasteful interiors .
  • with frills – this is the most complicated type of curtains to sew, due to the rich decorations and ruffles. At the same time, such curtains create a spectacular effect and constitute a unique decoration of the room.

How to sew?

If the decision to sew your own curtains has already been made, and all the necessary tools have been collected, then you can confidently proceed to the task. How to sew curtains with a tunnel, frills or grommets depends on your needs and skills. At first, you need to start with the preparation of bookmarks, preferably creating two-centimeter overlaps  on the longer sides of the curtain. To make sewing easier, it is worth ironing the fabric at the beginning. In the same way, make a bookmark at the top, but 10 cm wide, and put it on twice. It is also worth measuring 8 cm of the overlap at the bottom of the curtain. The material prepared in this way is enough to be hemmed with a sewing machine. Be sure to lead the seam close to the inner edge to prevent the material from slipping out. And that's it! A curtain prepared in this way is a guaranteed satisfaction and a beautiful decoration of any interior.

Summary

Self-sewing curtains does not have to be difficult and complicated. It is enough to choose a good quality material, think about your needs and interior style, and then equip yourself with basic sewing tools. You can buy any accessories, tapes, grommets in a stationary tailoring store or online. Internet haberdashery is a place where you can buy high-quality fabrics at attractive prices. Our offer is not only an online store – it is also a fabric wholesaler in Poznań, which specializes in selling the highest quality materials, such as satin. We will help you choose the perfect fabric, thanks to which you can sew original curtains with your own hands.
